Happy Retirement to Terry, Bern, Wayne, and Debby

Today we wished a fond farewell and happy retirement to four very special long-time employees: Terry, Bern, Wayne, and Debby. Together, this group has over 150 total years of experience at Abt. They have worked in just about every department that’s ever existed, each contributing something special.

In 2017, we honored Terry on his 50th anniversary at Abt. He started as a teenager in our warehouse, and retires with the longest active tenure of any Abt employee ever, after Bob Abt. Wayne has spent most of his 44 years here running our massive warehouse, ensuring it operates like a well-oiled machine. Debby joined us 34 years ago to help run our customer service department, and eventually found her way to a management position in appliance service. And though Bern is the rookie of the group, she’s still racked up an impressive 19 1/2 years here, retiring as manager of our appliance parts department.

These four have made the Abt family their own family, and vice versa—seven of their children work or have worked at Abt over the years. While we will miss seeing them every day, we’re excited for them to be moving on to more stress-free lives, and we wish them all many years of happy retirement.

They are 4 of the best people to work with I’ve ever known. Loyal, capable, and dedicated. Their combined knowledge of the world of retail is unparalleled. Each one is a treasure, and although I’m sure Abt will continue to hum along like a well-oiled machine, their contribution can not be overstated. Terry set an incredibly high bar as a salesperson, engendering loyalty in generations of customers. Wayne helped grow the business exponentially based on his incredible skills at running a warehouse virtually 24 hours a day. Debbie and Bern dealt with tens of thousands of customers in their careers, dealing with people at their most frustrated with skill and aplomb. They saved thousands of relationships that less skilled people would have lost. I wish them all a healthy and happy next chapter of their lives. They’ve certainly earned it.
